Tommy Hext - Aged 7 and 3/4
This tale was packed with creativity, humour, and festivity! There were so many things that we loved: the colourful descriptions, the playful characters, the brilliant poem and of course Sammy the Sneezing Sack! A somehow even more magically whimsical take on Dr. Seuss’s whimsically magical Christmas tale. We were particularly impressed by the use of similes: ‘…like a wrinkled raisin’. You captured the voice of the Grinch and Santa perfectly, and your ability in describing the Grinch’s change of heart was outstanding. Well done!
The Grinch’s Broken Heart.

One icy cold evening as the sun starts to set the grinch arrives at Christmas town at the North Pole to visit Santa.

He strolls into Santa‘s workshop and his eyes widen at the giant pile of presents. The grumpy green grinch was filled with jealousy and his heart collapsed on itself. He whispered a spell-
“Oh come alive Santa’s sack,
when Christmas Eve turns to black,
spill your presents from inside,
leave the sleigh on the ride.”

The sneaky grinch struts away and clicks his fingers and … vanishes.

When he arrives at home in the snow capped mountains, he excitedly tells his loyal dog Max about his evil plan and Max pants with anticipation.

The next day it’s Christmas Eve and Santa hopped into the sleigh. He sends the reindeer soaring into the black sky and the carefully packed sack opens its eyes and …

“Aaachhhhhooooo!”

The sack starts to sneeze. Sammy the sack opened her eyes wide in horror as the presents from inside has spilled out. Beautifully wrapped gifts tumble through the sooty black sky and fell into the Arctic Ocean.

Several hours later, Santa arrives at Tommy‘s and Greggy’s house. He uses the magic key to open the door and walks into the lounge. He doesn’t realise Tommy is hiding under the playroom sofa and Greggy is peeking down from the top of the ladder.
Santa puts his sack down by the tree and he happily eats the milk and cookies the boys left out for him. All of a sudden, a large

“Achhhooooooo!’’
fills the air and presents fly out the sack and hit Santa in the leg. Santa jumps in shock and nearly hits his head on the ceiling. Tommy and Greggy rush in to help and then they all spot the sneezing sack.
“Ho! Ho! Ho!” Said Santa, “what are you two doing out of bed?” Tommy says, “Hi Santa we were just excited to meet you!” And Greggy gives Santa a big smile.
Meanwhile, the sack sneezes again. She tells Santa that the grumpy grinch cast a spell on her. The sack is very upset that she lost the little children’s presents.
Together, they make a plan to end the Grinch’s spell. Tommy and Greg hide in the sack and try their best to keep the presents inside. Santa’s sleigh slides gracefully onto the Grinch’s mountainside. They are welcomed by Max the dog who is happily panting at their arrival.
Following Max’s lead, Tommy and Greggy slide down a rope from Santa sleigh and follow him into the Grinch’s cave. Tommy finds the Grinch and says to him, “you have ruined Christmas you big filthy animal!”
The Grinch’s heart was like a wrinkled raisin, but he instantly felt apologetic and sad about what he had done. With a rush to the heart, it grew 10 times bigger and he knew what he had to do. He turned to Tommy and Greggy and asked for their help. With a flick of his magic wand, they went back in time to when Santa was leaving the North Pole.
Santa is pleased to see that everything is back to normal, but he is worried about how tired he
is as he’s already delivered to half the world once already that night! Tommy tells Santa that him, Greggy and the Grinch will help to deliver the presents so Santa doesn’t get too tired and fall off the roof.
Together they take it in turns to hop down chimneys and deliver all the lovely presents. As the sun starts to rise, Tommy suggests they come home with him and Greggy for a party, but realising they need a disguise, Tommy and Greggy dress them up as two grumpy old men.
They tell Mum and Dad that they have invited some new neighbours from down the road to Christmas Day lunch and a party.
And that is the story of how the Grinch mended his broken heart, (again).
