Nathalia Kleczkowska Coutinho - Aged 9

A rollicking adventure if there ever was one! This sun-lit story and its bright imagery will have the reader feeling that they’re right there exploring forests and dodging panicked pigs with Holly & Jack. There was truly a lovely sense of the positive relationships between characters and their love of nature.  We all loved the question at the end to readers and really enjoyed the plot; it was a great adventure. They must stop fox eating the chicks though, surely? What a cliffhanger!

The story built well and kept our attention easily.  We particularly enjoyed the question at the end, it was an ingenious idea to then allow the reader to essentially imagine their own ending by thinking of what they would/ should / could do in that scenario. We will definitely be reading this to our pre-school class and be asking them the same question!

The Adventures of Jack and Holly

It was a beautiful sunny day at the countryside, when spring came, the flowers were blooming, there were no clouds in the sky and the birds were singing with joy.

Holly and Jack, who were best friends, were playing happily with a ball near a small tree, when suddenly there was a tremendous storm, and within seconds the rain was pouring so hard that a huge branch of the tree fell four meters far from the children.

They were terrified when lighting began. Jack and Holly ran as fast as they could, but soon they were safely

in the barn.

Holly remembered about the animals and watched as they panicked: chickens ran away, sheep and cows fainted,

horses ran in circles, pigs crashed into trees and birds flew away.

Another lighting hit a tree and it fell.

A mother bird flew away leaving her eggs behind, the nest fell off when the lighting struck the tree, and the eggs rolled out when they hit the ground. Four eggs cracked and hatched.

When the storm was over Jack and Holly rushed to see if the chicks were fine.

The chicks were bright yellow with bits of brown, there was no sight of the mother bird, so the friends took the chicks with them to their playhouse which they built with sicks, hay, leaves, and rocks. The chick’s nest was ruined, Holly got some soft flower petals and leaves, and Jack got some sticks and hay, and then they made a new and better nest. Jack put the chicks in the nest, and they watched them fall asleep. Night fell and soon everyone was asleep.

In the morning the sun was rising, and Holly and Jack didn’t even eat breakfast because they were too excited to see the chicks. When they saw the chicks, they only saw THREE! The children looked everywhere: in the hay, in the pond, high in trees and low under logs. They were afraid what would happen to the poor baby chick.

They went to look DEEPER, Jack jumped into the pond, but only saw frogs, fish, and some rocks. Meanwhile Holly walked through piles of haystacks, she went deeper and deeper and deeper, until she got LOST! She called for help but there was no answer, Holly tried again but again, there was no answer. The poor lost girl went down on her knees and started sobbing. Far beyond the fields was a black Yorkshire Terrier.

The dog heard a cry and went after it. When he reached the last field, he saw a farm, but that didn’t stop him from following the cry. Then he went through the haystacks and found Holly with tears down her cheeks. The black dog went under her arm and put a paw on her lap. The girl hugged it until her tears were all dried up. Suddenly Jack came out of nowhere and surprised Holly and the dog. Holly told him everything about the dog and then asked if they could keep him. Jack agreed, and they named him Lucky because he made them happy.

The children knew that dogs have an excellent sense of smell, so then they thought that the dog could help them find the chick. They went to the children’s playhouse where they kept the baby chicks in their new nest. Holly took one of the chicks and held it near Lucky’s nose for him to smell. Lucky barked and barked again, the children just stared at each other.

The Yorkshire Terrier sniffed the ground and then started to follow some smell, and the children followed behind.

The group past two fields and then found a river Holly and Lucky went one way and Jack went the other, then after a minute Jack yelled at Holly to come to him. He explained that there were steppingstones and that’s how they could get to the other side.

Jack hopped on the first rock, wobbled and he nearly fell but luckily the dog held him back, then he hopped on the next rock. Then it was Holly’s turn and then the clever dog hopped on and put a paw in the flowing water, then jumped into the river and swam.

Finally, they reached the other side, and they went on. The dog found some of the chick’s fur. Holly and Jack gasped, they knew they were close.

Soon the friends arrived at the forest, and in they went.

Holly screamed when she saw a spider, and Jack jumped in surprise when a frog crocked and leaped in front of him.

It was starting to get a little bit windy, and there were only two clouds in the sky. The sky was as blue as the sea and the sun was shining like gold.

The end of the forest was nearly there but just as Jack looked at a tree the dog barked; it was more of the chick’s fur. Holly and Jack knew they were even closer. Then they passed a field and on the left there was a cave. The journey led to the cave where it was darker than you could possibly imagine. There were webs hanging from the ceiling and stalactites and stalagmites were everywhere.

They heard a bat flapping its wings and a weird sound. There were three paths to go to, straight, left and right. They barely saw a bat sleeping.

There was a crack in the top of the cave and the sun rays was passing through so the group could now see a lot more…

Right there in front of them was a . . . . . . . . .

fox getting ready to eat the chick!

What would YOU do . . .?
