Miley - Crescent - Andrews - Aged 12

With a broad fantastical history and individual characters’ personal stakes, this imaginative narration creates a foreboding mystery that slowly builds up to a finger-biting cliff-hanger. This story successfully sets up a whole world in only a short space of time and brings a new slant to the human vs animal conflict. The exposition in the first paragraph was really useful and created a brilliant sense of tension. We really want to know what happens next! This was a world that had us gripped from the very beginning. We loved the inventive magical lore and were really invested in Sun and Moon! What a cliff hanger! Well done!

Four siblings three brothers and one sister live in a small village on the outskirts of a mountain range. The mountain range was infested with ‘creatures’. Creatures are beings of magic and by the people of the village they are considered demonic or witchcraft therefore want the creatures gone. Hunters have been sent out into the forest to capture as many as possible then bring them back before placing them in an arena where the creatures and the prisoners of the village shall fight to the death. Creatures have three different breeds, shapeshifters (creature that can take any form of animal) Gemini’s (a creature that can only take one form of animal also known as the the half face) and the most ‘demonic’ of them the reapers (are neither human nor animal but are stuck somewhere in between). Every 30 years the hunters that capture all of the creatures come back to the village and select however many new hunters they need but the new recruits are to be from the ages of 10-18.

Sun and Moon had been chosen as hunters when they were just 10 years old.  They were twin brothers that had been found on a door step along with their younger siblings Earth and Lunar during a storm in the middle of the big creature hunt, the hunt that had driven the creatures into the mountain range in the first place. It was believed that their mother was killed and had left them their to keep them safe. But now the twins were both 13. “I’ll be back later Sun I want to see if I can catch a rabbit!” Moon called to his brother stepping out of the door of the hunter cabin. “Ok Moon! Eclipse says to be back by sundown!” Sun called back. “I will!” Yelled Moon running away down the path.

After almost an hour of walking Moon came across a lake he hadn’t seen before it had a small island with a willow tree sitting in the centre of it. When the young boy looked closer he could see another little boy around the same age as him wrapping his wrists in bandages to support them. Moon grabbed his crossbow from his belt and aimed it at the boy. No other people aside from the hunters should be in the forest and if there was any other person then it was a creature. Just before Moon could fire his arrow the boy looked up. “Do my eyes deceive me?” Asked the boy. “Moon is that you?” He asked. Moon was clearly frightened. “Who are you? How do you know my-” He paused recognising the strange boy. “Solar?”

It had come clear to Moon that he was not born in the village and that him and his siblings were in fact creatures and this was where they were born, Solar was their cousin who was three years older than Moon. Over time Solar taught Moon how to be a creature again. The pair were both gemini’s and their animal form was a wolf. Not much had happened over the many years that Moon was reawakened as a creature, he didn’t tell Sun about their past since he knew he couldn’t handle it seeing how unstable Sun was in the first place. They thrived for quite a long time meeting some shapeshifters, Crescent and Angel, and even a reaper, Fawne. But that was until they were found.

Moon woke up one morning and went to meet Solar, Crescent, Angel, Bella and Mayhem at the willow tree lake. He transformed into his wolf form the moment he stepped out of the cabin door and ran to meet Solar.  However Moon failed to notice that Bloodmoon (the deputy hunter) also the one with another person (Bloodmoon’s twin brother) inside of his head, was eating an early breakfast on the decking and had watched Moon walk out, turn into a wolf and run off. Obviously Bloodmoon followed tranquilliser gun in hand and sprinted after him. Bloodmoon shot down all of them before putting muzzles on them and dragging them back in a small cage. “Look what a caught!” Called out Bloodmoon as the rest of the hunters came out to see. “How did you catch six?!” Eclipse (the chief hunter) asked in shock.

Bloodmoon looked Sun dead in the eye and said “Your brother lead me right to them.” “Well then where is he?” Sun asked in a panic having very severe anxiety without him. Bloodmoon bashed on the cage in Moon’s direction. “Right here.” Bloodmoon snarled. “You mean-” Sun stuttered. “He’s a creature!” Ruin (One of the other hunters) snapped. Sun was in utter shock. Moon started to regain consciousness as the dart began to wear off “Sun… You need to… Run… Your one of us… Go home!” Moon groaned before passing out again. Bloodmoon, Eclipse and Ruin stared Sun dead in the face. Overwhelmed with stress and anxiety Sun turned into his wolf form. Not used to four legs he tried to run away the the Bloodmoon twins grabbed him by the tail and grabbed his ears yanking his head up so Ruin could muzzle him. “LOOK AT THE SNAKE.” Bloodmoon snickered before throwing him into the back of the truck along with the others. “I think its time for the games.” Eclipse smiled.

Moon opened his eyes slowly to see Sun muzzled still in his wolf form shaking in the corner as the car went over the rocky mountain terrain. “Why didn’t you tell me?” He asked holding back tears. “I didn’t want to scare you…” Moon said gathering the strength to get to his paws and walk over to him.

Soon they arrived at the arena and were given to the scientists that would give them a hostility injection that would turn them into terrifying rabid beasts to make the village think that they were always like that. Moon was first to go into the holder that would keep him still so the scientists could inject him easier. Once everyone was injected that when the announcer for the games started to begin. Moon wasn’t in control of his own body but he could still hear the names and the crimes of the people he would be killing be echoed into the arena. Many of them he didn’t know but then he heard the announcer call out the names “Earth and Lunar, for being related to the spawn of the devil which can only make you one of them!” He called as Earth and Lunar were thrown into the arena along with the rest.

Soon after the gate keeping the creatures in opened and they were all shoving and pushing each other out of the way screeching and wanting to be the first one to sprint out. Moon saw the fog covered arena and his Younger brother and sister sitting in the middle next to some others. Still not in control,
